Re – Sensei Delegation to the 19th Australian Iaido and 10th Australian Jodo Championships, Seminar and Grading Exam.

The AKR Iaido and Jodo Boards have announced the names of the sensei who will comprise the delegation to attend the above events, which will be held in Perth during January 2010.

2010 FIK Asian Zone Referee Seminar.

Place:  Taipei, Taiwan

Dates:  February 27 (Sat.) and 28 (Sun.), 2010.  The Welcome Party will be held in the evening of Feb. 26 (Fri.).

In principle, this Shinpan skilling seminar is for members graded 4th Dan and above.  More details will be made available when they are provided.  Members should enquire to their state association.

AKR National Council met in Melbourne over the weekend of 17 & 18 October.  The purpose of the meeting was to consider, discuss and make decisions to improve opportunities for members development by improving and adopting our own policies and practices.

AKR National Council comprises a Delegate from each of the affiliated State and Territory associations, the Kendo, Iaido and Jodo Boards plus the AKR Executive Committee.

Some items from the meeting that may be of interest to members are –

AKR Adopts a Privacy Policy. More details here and here.

Kendo 1 kyu examination elements have been modified. Details in MoD 2, here and here. Instructors, please consider including an explanation on the change of examination terminology from “ji-geiko” to “jitsugi”in your training.

Other subjects that will be enacted soon, include – an injury and incident reporting process and an alteration to the method to count votes for Boards elections.

A copy of the minutes and background notes from the meeting can be obtained on request from State and Territory associations.

14th WORLD KENDO CHAMPIONSHIPS and AKR KENDO TEAM NEWS.

Competition at the 14th World Kendo Championships concluded yesterday.

Results will be published elsewhere, but while you are waiting, a brief summary is below, including an unabashed commentary on the Australian Teams results.

Congratulations to the new Champions of the 14th World Kendo Championships.

Congratulations also to Australian Team Coach, Brett Smith, Assistant Coach, Yuji Sano, Manager, James Saretta and all the men and women members of the Australian Kendo Team.  All members displayed excellent kendo, their efforts and results are to be commended.

Men’s Teams (35 teams)

Champion Team – Japan.  Second – USA.  Equal third – Brazil and Korea.

Australia wins their pool matches on points against Hawaii and Finland, then advance to the qualifying round to meet the current world champions, and this years second placegetter, Korea.   Australian Men’s Team placed in the final 16.

Men’s Individual (149 competitors)

Champion – S. Teramoto, Japan.  Second – B.H. Park, Korea.  Equal third – C. Choi, Korea; K. Lee, Korea.

Australian Men’s Team Captain Kirby Smith reaches quarter finals, only to be defeated by the new Champion, S. Teramoto.  Kirby Smith receives Fighting Spirit Award.

All Australian Men win their pools and advance to the qualifying round. Stuart Burke reaches top 16 and Kirby Smith reaches the top 8.

Women’s Teams (19 teams)

Champions – Japan.  Second – Korea.

Australian Women’s Team defeats Sweden to advance to the qualifying round to meet current world champions, Japan, in the second round.  Team Captain Kate Sylvester ties final match 1-1 with Japanese taisho.  Kate Sylvester receives Fighting Spirit Award.  Australian Women’s Team finishes in the top 8 (again).

Women’s Individual (104 competitors)

Winner – Y. Takami, Japan.  Second – S. Shojima, Japan.  Equal thirds – C. Shinzato and E. Takashima, Japan.

Team Captain Kate Sylvester, Chiaki Kobayashi and Vivian Yung all win their pools and advance to qualifying rounds.   Chiaki next meets this year’s Champion Y. Takami of Japan.  Vivian wins her first qualifying round and advances to the top 16.

23 February 2009 AUSTRALIAN KENDO TEAM SELECTED FOR 14th WORLD KENDO CHAMPIONSHIPS, BRAZIL 2009.

At the conclusion of the Squad Training and Team Selection held over the past weekend in Melbourne, the following teams were announced:

5 December 2008 Sensei Yoichi Yano graded to Kendo 7th dan in Japan.

20 October 2008 The time in grade to be eligible for a 1 dan examination in Iaido and Jodo has been altered.

Eligibilty to participate in AKR National Competitions, to be Examined has been redefined.

A member whose fees have not been received prior to 30 November is ineligible to participate in AKR National Competitions held in that membership year.

Overseas based competitors, or AKR members who are not an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Australia may compete in AKR international goodwill competitions.

10 December 2007 Awards of Kendo Renshi Three more members of the AKR have recently been awarded the Shogo level of Renshi. (Announcement). 24 October 2007 AKR National Council meets in Melbourne. Saturday, 20 and Sunday 21 October. AKR conducts an annual conference, followed by a meeting of AKR National Council in October each year. The purpose of the event is to review and improve. The meeting was attended by Delegates from state and territory affiliated kendo associations, AKR Board Chairmen and the AKR Executive Committee. Many AKR policies were altered at the meeting and new initiatives adopted, including;

  • AKR Grading Rule changes;
  • Kyu and Dan Grading Requirements and Procedures.
  • Introduction of an AKR Coach (Instructor) Accreditation scheme;
  • Introduction of an AKR National Sports Injury Insurance Scheme.
  • Alter membership Policies for Competition and Grading Examination Eligibility;
  • Fee and funding structure changes;
