We regret to inform you that Mr. Kunio Shizawa, Instructor at Nippon Sports University Kendo Club, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.
For many within our kendo community, the passing of Shizawa Sensei will be felt deeply. His contribution to kendo, his guidance to generations of practitioners, and the kindness he showed to those fortunate enough to train and learn alongside him will not be forgotten.
Kendo teaches us that while our time on the dojo floor may be temporary, the spirit, knowledge and example shared between teacher and student can continue far beyond our years of practice. In this way, a teacher’s legacy lives on through every person they have influenced.
As we remember Shizawa Sensei, let us honour his life not only through our words, but through the way we continue to practise — with humility, respect, discipline and consideration for others.
On behalf of the Australian Kendo Renmei and our members across Australia, we extend our deepest condolences to Shizawa Sensei’s family, friends, students and the Nippon Sport Science University Kendo Club.
May his spirit rest peacefully, and may his legacy continue to live on through the many lives and generations of kendo he has touched.

The following is a translation of an announcement published on the Nittaidai Kendo Club Website.
“We regret to inform you that Mr. Kunio Shizawa, Instructor of our university’s Kendo Club, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.
We wish to express our deepest gratitude for the kindness and support he showed during his lifetime, and we offer our sincere condolences and prayers for the repose of his soul.
In accordance with the wishes of the bereaved family, the funeral will be held as a private family service on Saturday, October 3.
Furthermore, at the request of the family, we respectfully decline all condolence visits, monetary offerings, floral tributes, and other gifts.
We kindly ask for your understanding and consideration in this matter.’
