Policies for Competition and Grading Examination Eligibility

The AKR grading exam structure provides for a members dan or kyu grade to advance progressively with their training and experience. A minimum period is required to elapse between grade levels, as shown below. In addition, grading exams are only available for (current and financial) AKR affiliate members and members of other overseas FIK affiliates.

KENDO, IAIDO and JODO DAN GRADES
Years for time in grade will be calculated from month to month i.e. March to March (regardless of what date in March).
For this purpose the respective AKR National Championships will be regarded as one year apart.

Grade KENDO, IAIDO and JODO DAN GRADES (* Effective from 19 October 2008).
1 Dan - * Kendo. Five months or more after granting of 1 kyu, minimum age (at exam date) of 14 years;
1 Dan - * Iaido and Jodo. Three months or more after granting of 1 kyu, minimum age (at exam date) of 14 years;
2 Dan - One year or more after granting of 1 Dan;
3 Dan - Two years or more after granting of 2 Dan;
4 Dan - Three years or more after granting of 3 Dan;
5 Dan - Four years or more after granting of 4 Dan;
6 Dan - Five years or more after granting of 5 Dan.
