AKR Australian Kendo Team for the 15th World Kendo Championships announced.

It is with great pleasure that the Kendo Board of Australian Kendo Renmei is announcing the team that will represent Australia at the next World Kendo Championships. Over the past year the Australian coaching team of Brett Smith and Yuji Sano have been working with an initial squad of over 30 applicants to be select our strongest possible team. On the weekend of September 17 and 18, a selection panel made up of four sensei (Yoichi Yano, Yakov Macak, Brian Brestovac and Joe Semmler) and coach Brett Smith, put a select number of squad members through their paces and selected our team.

Kate Sylvester (C) Arpad Maksay
Sharyn Wragg Kirby Smith (C)

Kate Sylvester and Kirby Smith were selected as team captains.

The team has a strong blend of experienced previous WKC competitors plus four players who will compete at their first World Kendo Championship. In 2012 the championships will be held in Italy and with 50 countries competing will be the biggest WKC on record. Congratulations to those selected and thank you to all the applicants. It was with their commitment and hard work that we were able to get this result.

We wish the team all the best with their preparations in the final push to the WKC!
