Vale: Betty Lawley

With great sadness, we advise that Betty Lawley passed away on the morning of 14 May 2013.

Betty, 79, was awarded a Life Membership of the AKR, in appreciation of her support and contribution toward building kendo in Australia since the 1960’s.  Betty was the wife of the late Rex Lawley, one of the founders of Australian Kendo and the mother of former Australian Kendo Champion, Steve Lawley.

Betty was a stalwart supporter of Australian Kendo.  Her generosity and support was unrivalled and she will be sadly missed.

The AKR extends our sympathy and condolences to Steve, the Lawley family, relations and friends.

In the history of Australian Kendo, referring to Betty, another founding member and former President, the late Ron Bennett, wrote the following paragraph.

Betty may never have won a trophy, but she was without a doubt THE driving force in Australian Kendo right up until just before Rex passed away. Betty’s decades of selfless service were recognised with a special Life Membership award.
